A long way out in the deep blue sea there lived a fish.
在遥远的蓝色大海深处，住着一条鱼。

Not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean.
这可不是一条普通的鱼，就是找遍整个大海，也再找不到这么美丽的鱼了。

His scales were every shade of blue and green and purple, with sparkling silver scales  among them.
它那五颜六色的鳞片，就像彩虹一样，蓝的、绿的、紫的......闪闪发光。

The other fish were amazed at his beauty. They called him Rainbow Fish.
别的鱼都羡慕地睁大了眼睛，叫他彩虹鱼。

“Come on, Rainbow Fish,” they would call. “Come and play with us!”
“来呀，彩虹鱼，来和我们一块玩吧！”

But the Rainbow Fish would just glide past, proud and silent, letting his scales shimmer.
可是，彩虹鱼连看都不看他们一眼，就嗖地游了过去，还骄傲地闪了闪鳞片。

One day, a little blue fish followed after him.
有一天，一条小蓝鱼从后面追了上来。

“Rainbow Fish,” he called, “wait for me! Please give me one of your shiny scales. They are so wonderful, and you have so many.”
冲他招呼道：“彩虹鱼，等等我！求求你了，把你的闪光鳞片，送给我一片好吗？就一片！实在是太漂亮了。再说，你又有那么多。

“You want me to give you one of special scales? Who do you think you are?” cried the Rainbow Fish. “Get away from me!”
“你说什么？把我这与众不同的闪光鳞送你一片，别开玩笑了！”彩虹鱼叫了起来。“快给我闪一边去！”

Shocked, the little blue fish swam away.
小蓝鱼吓了一跳，赶紧游走了。

He was so upset; he told all his friends what had happened.
小蓝鱼不知道怎么办才好，就把这件事告诉了朋友们。

From then on, no one would have anything to do with the Rainbow Fish.
从那以后，再也没有一条鱼理彩虹鱼了。

They turned away when he swam by.
彩虹鱼一游过来，大家就都把头扭到了一边。

What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them?
即使有一身让人眼花缭乱的闪光鳞片，却没有人赞美，又有什么用呢？

Now he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean.
结果，彩虹鱼变成大海里最孤独的一条鱼了。

One day he poured out his troubles to the starfish. “I really am beautiful. Why doesn’t anybody like me?”
有一天，彩虹鱼向海星诉苦说：“我这么漂亮，为什么谁也不喜欢我呢？”

“I can’t answer that for you,” said the starfish. “But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you will find the wise octopus. Maybe she can help you.”
“这我怎么知道。”海星说，“不过，你要是越过珊瑚礁，游进一个深深的洞穴里，就能见到无所不知的章鱼奶奶了，她也许能帮助你。”

The Rainbow Fish found the cave.
彩虹鱼找到了那个洞穴。

It was very dark inside and he couldn’t see anything.
里面黑糊糊的，什么也看不见。

Then suddenly two eyes caught him in their glare and the octopus emerged from the darkness.
黑暗中，突然有两只雪亮的眼睛盯住了彩虹鱼，紧接着章鱼游了出来。

“I have been waiting for you,” said the octopus with a deep voice.
“我正在等你呢。”章鱼用低沉的声音说。

“The waves have told me your story. This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.”
“海浪把你的事情都告诉我了。我建议你把你的闪光鳞，分给每条鱼一片。这样一来，你虽然不是一条最美丽的鱼了，但你却能体会到 什么才是幸福，如何获得幸福。”

“I can’t…” the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink.
“可是......”彩虹鱼刚想再说些什么，章鱼已经消失在漆黑的墨汁里了。

Give away my scales?
把我的鳞片分给他们？

My beautiful shining scales? Never.
把这一身闪光鳞分给他们？开什么玩笑。

How could I ever be happy without them?
没有了闪光鳞，还怎么能获得幸福呢？

Suddenly he felt the light touch of a fin.
就在这时，不知道谁的鱼鳍轻轻地碰了彩虹鱼一下。

The little blue fish was back!
原来是小蓝鱼又来了！

“Rainbow Fish, please, don’t be angry. I just want one little scale.”
“彩虹鱼，求求你啦，别生气。只要送给我一片最最小的闪光鳞就行。”

The Rainbow Fish wavered.
彩虹鱼犹豫起来。

Only one very very small shimmery scale, he thought.
他想，不就是一片最最小、最最小的闪光鳞吗？

Well maybe I wouldn’t miss just one.
好吧，反正只送一片，也没有什么舍不得的。

Carefully the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish.
彩虹鱼小心翼翼、小心翼翼地把一片最最小的鳞片，送给了小蓝鱼。

“Thank you! Thank you very much!”
“谢谢！太谢谢了！”

The little blue fish bubbled playfully, as he tucked the shiny scale in among his blue ones.
“咕嘟咕嘟......”小蓝鱼开心地吐出了一串泡泡。把闪光鳞贴到了自己那蓝色的鳞片当中。

A rather peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish.
彩虹鱼的心中涌起了一种奇妙的感觉。

For a long time he watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with his new scale glittering in the water.
他久久地凝望着小蓝鱼闪动着的新的鳞片，在水里游来游去。

The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing, so it didn’t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by the other fish.
小蓝鱼闪动着鳞片在海里这么一游，彩虹鱼立刻就被别的鱼团团围住了。

Everyone wanted a glittering scale.
谁不想要一片闪光鳞呢！

The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right.
彩虹鱼送了一片又一片。

And the more he gave away, themore delighted he became.
越送心里越快乐。

When the water around him filled with glimmering scales, he at last felt at home among the other fish.
身边的海水都银光闪闪了，说不出为什么，他就像回到了家里，和大家在一起非常快乐。

Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left.
终于，只剩下最后一片闪光鳞了。

His most prized possessions had been given away, yet he was very happy.
彩虹鱼把自己最宝贵的东西都分给了大家，可他却觉得非常幸福。

“Come on Rainbow Fish,” they called.“Come and play with us!”
“来呀，彩虹鱼，来和我们一起玩吧！” 大家叫道。

“Here I come,” said the Rainbow Fish and happy as a splash, he swam off to join his friends.
“来啦——”彩虹鱼说着，欢快地朝着朋友们游去了。
